The Subtitling Company provides translations in a large number of languages. All our translations are adapted to the project for which they are intended. When subtitling we take the available time and space into account, which can sometimes mean that we have to seriously shorten and summarise that which is said. In the case of translations for voice-over we add time codes, so that the narrator knows exactly when he has to start speaking and in the case of dubbing we take the lip movements of the actors into account. Our translators base themselves on the programme's images and the soundtrack and also use the script, if available. Although using a script can make the work considerably easier, it isn't a prerequisite. In addition, we also check to see that the script is correct and the spelling of the names etc. is always verified as well. We offer subtitles in both one language and in two. In the case of subtitles in two languages two different languages are combined in one subtitle. In Belgium this is the case in subtitles for the cinema, for instance, where the upper line is in French and the lower line in Dutch. Other language combinations are, of course, also possible. We also sometimes subtitle a programme in the original language, because the speakers are difficult to understand, for example, or in the case of subtitles for the deaf and hard of hearing. |
