The Audio Description Company. In September 2007 The Subtitling Company set up a special department for audio description called The Audio Description Company. This department will mainly concern itself with creating audio descriptions. Audio description (AD) is a technique whereby a film is provided with an accompanying commentary for the blind and partially sighted so that they too can enjoy following a film. The intention is to provide as much information about what can be seen on screen as possible without omitting or interrupting the dialogues and/or background noises. A very delicate task. It is estimated that approximately 1% of the population is blind or partially sighted but there are no official figures to confirm this (source: Belgian Federation for the Blind and Partially Sighted). In addition to this large target group, other people, such as the elderly, people with concentration problems, people with a mild handicap, etc., also benefit from audio description. And this is a group that is continuing to grow. In America audio description has been around for some time and it has been shown that even those who can see appreciate it. For example, there are people who play DVDs with audio description in the car and use them as a kind of 'talking book'... In Belgium audio description is still in its infancy, although various institutions and associations are working hard to promote it. Since September 2007 the Higher Institute for Translation and Interpreting in Antwerp offers an AD option as part of its Master's degree in Translation. On this course the students are familiarised with the difficulties of description and learn to describe films and TV programmes themselves. More information (in Dutch) about the Higher Institute for Translation and Interpreting can be found at http://www.hivt.be |

To Walk AgainApril 2007 was dominated by To Walk Again, a documentary film by Stijn Coninx about Marc Herremans. On 28th January 2002 promising triathlete Marc Herremans fell badly while training on Lanzarotte, resulting in the young top-class athlete being paralysed from the chest down. To Walk Again tells Marc's story after the accident and that of the people around him. Not only his sporting achievements feature in the film but also his charity, which devotes itself to helping people with spinal cord injuries. To Walk Again is the second Flemish film, after King of the World, to be digitally projected and The Subtitling Company provided the subtitles for this project too. In the case of digital cinema it is necessary to provide Kinepolis with subtitles that are in a special format. In order to meet this demand, we have developed software ourselves to enable us to make subtitle files that are compatible with the CineCanvas format (.xml). We are now able to convert all standard subtitle files into this specific format. To Walk Again was subtitled bilingually in French and Dutch and monolingually in Dutch. The conscious decision was made to subtitle the entire film, including the songs, in order to make it accessible to as many people as possible. More information on the film and the charity can be found at http://www.sport.be/towalkagain. |

Subtitle ScreenerMost customers like to take a look at their subtitles before we finish off their programme. Until recently we sent the subtitles to them in the form of a Word document for approval or we invited the customer to our office for a preview. Since the beginning of March we have been able to offer customers a third option: the subtitle screener. This is a programme with which we can create a subtitles video file (.wmv-file). That way the customer knows exactly what the final result will look like without having to first come to our office to see it or having a subtitled tape or DVD made. The subtitled video file is placed on a secure ftp site that only the customer can access. After watching the video the customer can, if necessary, send us any adjustments to be made, after which we finish off the programme. It doesn't get much easier! |
